Laboratory Exercises in Molecular Pathology is organized by major organ systems and then by disease type. In each exercise, there is a distillation of essential disease-specific information (related to frequency, risk factors, disease manifestations) and a description of disease pathogenesis (molecular and cellular) that is based upon accepted principles from the literature. Further, each exercise is illustrated with (1) gross specimens, (2) microscopic histopathology, (3) immunohistochemistry and/or in situ hybridization (when applicable), (4) laboratory techniques to probe the molecular nature of the pathological lesions, and (5) molecular diagnostics (when applicable). In addition, each exercise contains one or more cases studies to provide students with exposure to the clinical workup of a patient, based upon physical examination findings, traditional pathological analysis, and state-of-the-art molecular assessment. The laboratory techniques included emphasize the dissection of molecular and cellular pathogenesis of the disease in question. Hence, students will see examples of laboratory results that illustrate how pathways were elucidated. Further, the sections on molecular diagnostics illustrate how molecular testing exploits what is known about molecular pathogenesis in a specific disease setting. The manual does not present molecular methods and techniques in isolation; it illustrates how these experimental approaches and applied methodologies can be used to generate meaningful information in the clinical setting. Presents foundational information, examples of gross and microscopic pathology, and examples of molecular approaches and molecular testing all in one resource Offers an ancillary website with videos corresponding to the evaluation of gross specimens, the assessment of microscopic images, and the demonstration of how laboratory techniques are performed Features exercises which contain one or more cases studies to provide students with exposure to the clinical workup of a patient, based upon physical examination findings, traditional pathological analysis, and state-of-the-art molecular assessment Provides case studies which include self-assessment modules and decision trees that allow students to make mistakes and then receive explanations

Diagnostic Molecular Pathology: A Guide to Applied Molecular Testing is organized around disease types (genetic disease, infectious disease, neoplastic disease, among others). In each section, the authors provide background on disease mechanisms and describe how laboratory testing is built on knowledge of these mechanisms. Sections are dedicated to general methodologies employed in testing (to convey the concepts reflected in the methods), and specific description of how these methods can be applied and are applied to specific diseases are described. The book does not present molecular methods in isolation, but considers how other evidence (symptoms, radiology or other imaging, or other clinical tests) is used to guide the selection of molecular tests or how these other data are used in conjunction with molecular tests to make diagnoses (or otherwise contribute to clinical workup). In addition, final chapters look to the future (new technologies, new approaches) of applied molecular pathology and how discovery-based research will yield new and useful biomarkers and tests. Diagnostic Molecular Pathology: A Guide to Applied Molecular Testing contains exercises to test readers on their understanding of how molecular diagnostic tests are utilized and the value of the information that can be obtained in the context of the patient workup. Readers are directed to an ancillary website that contains supplementary materials in the form of exercises where decision trees can be employed to simulate actual clinical decisions. Focuses on the menu of molecular diagnostic tests available in modern molecular pathology or clinical laboratories that can be applied to disease detection, diagnosis, and classification in the clinical workup of a patient Explains how molecular tests are utilized to guide the treatment of patients in personalized medicine (guided therapies) and for prognostication of disease Features an ancillary website with self-testing exercises where decision trees can be employed to simulate actual clinical decisions Highlights new technologies and approaches of applied molecular pathology and how discovery-based research will yield new and useful biomarkers and tests

Continuing in the tradition of its predecessors, this new edition combines an informal, easy to read style with a thorough introduction to concepts and terminology of plant pathology. After reviewing fundamental concepts, the book discusses groups of plant pathogens and molecular tools for studying them, pathogen interactions, epidemiology and disease control, and special topics in plant pathology. The book details various disease-causing organisms, including viruses, fungi, prokaryotics, nematodes, and various biotic agents. It also examines various plant-pathogen interactions, molecular attack strategies, extracellular enzymes, host defenses, and disruption of plant function. New in the Third Edition Molecular plant-fungal interactions Expanded treatment of molecular tools Advanced biocontrol concepts How to use and care for microscopes

Revised and updated with new concepts, case studies, and laboratory exercises, Plant Pathology Concepts and Laboratory Exercises, Second Edition supplies highly detailed and accurate information in a well-organized and accessible format. New additions to the second edition include five new topic and exercise chapters on soilborne pathogens, molecular tools, biocontrol, and plant-fungal interactions, information on in vitro pathology, an appendix on plant pathology careers, and how to use and care for the microscope. An accompanying cd-rom contains figures from the text as well as supplemental full-color photos and PowerPoint slides. Unique Learning Tools Retaining the informal style of the previous edition, this volume begins each topic with a concept box to highlight important ideas. Several laboratory exercises support each topic and cater to a wide range of skill sets from basic to complex. Procedure boxes for the experimental exercises give detailed outlines and comments on the experiments, step by step instruction, anticipated results, and thought provoking questions. Case studies of specific diseases and processes are presented as a bulleted list supplying essential information at a glance. Comprehensive Coverage Divided into six primary parts, this valuable reference introduces basic concepts of plant pathology with historical perspectives, fundamental ideas of disease, and disease relationships with the environment. It details various disease-causing organisms including viruses, prokaryotic organisms, plant parasitic nematodes, fungi, plant parasitic seed plants, and other biotic and abiotic diseases. Exploring various plant-pathogen interactions including treatments of molecular attack strategies, extracellular enzymes, host defenses, and disruption of plant function, the book presents the basic ideas of epidemiology, control strategies, and disease diagnosis.

The Contento Experimental Cell Biology Lab Book is a modular design that matches the topics discussed in Karp’s textbook. The manual itself consists of 30+ experiments that coincide and complement each of the 18 chapters in the Karp text. There are three possible designs of the lab book, based on the instructor’s needs. These designs focus on either Techniques, Concepts, or Organelles. The procedures of the 30+ experiments remain standard and unchanged in all designs of the lab book. Special Overview pages, Discussion Questions and Datasheets bookend the procedures in order to create each of the possible textbook designs. This gives instructors flexibility to create a lab book that suits their lecture course curriculum, their experience, and available equipment and supplies.
